First Year Undergraduate, Graduate, Transfer, and Other New Students

All new students must be registered for classes to be eligible for a student RUconnection card.

Rutgers University students have access to Rutgers University Libraries, Computer Labs, Recreation Centers, Campus Meal Plans, Housing, Sporting Events, Student Discounts, and a Raider or RUExpress Card account.

For the Fall Semester:

  • Student RUconnection cards for the fall semester are issued on or after Tuesday, August 22, 2017. 
  • Students must present a valid government-issued photo ID (domestic driver's license, passport, state/county/military ID, greencard, etc.).*
  • There is no fee charged for the first issuance of the card. A replacement fee of $20 applies to lost, stolen, or intentionally damaged cards (See Lost/Replacement ID Cards).

For the Spring Semester:

  • Student RUconnection card for the spring semester can be issued after January 1st. 
  • Students must present a valid government-issued photo ID (domestic driver's license, passport, state/county/military ID, greencard, etc.).*
  • There is no fee charged for the first issuance of the card. A replacement fee of $20 applies to lost, stolen, or intentionally damaged cards (See Lost/Replacement ID Cards).

Continuing Undergraduate/Graduate Students with Expired ID or Change of Program

Continuing Undergraduate and Graduate students who need to have their student RUconnection card reissued due to expiration or a change in student status may do so at any time.

Renewal of a student RUconnection card may be obtained by the following:

  • With the return of your current/expired student RUconnection card
  • With active registration for the current semester
  • At any RUconnection card office (no appointment necessary)
  • By presenting a valid government-issued photo ID such as a driver’s license or passport*
  • With a $20 replacement fee or payment receipt from a Rutgers University Cashier’s Office if current/expired card is not returned (See Lost/Replacement ID Cards)

Please note:
For change of program, the photo ID system must have your updated school in order for them to reissue a Student RUconnection card.  Check with Registar that it has been changed.  The change will take 2 business days (does not include weekends) to update in the photo ID system.

Teaching/Graduate Assistants (TA/GA's) and Workstudy (Student Workers)

Please note that TA/GA's and Workstudy are eligible to receive a student RUconnection card only. TA/GA's and Workstudy students are not eligible to receive a Faculty/Staff ID card.

Summer/Winter Session (only) Students

Summer/Winter session RUconnection cards are issued to non-Rutgers students enrolled in classes. Obtaining an RUconnection card is optional, but is required for access to certain facilities and services.

Summer/Winter session students have access to Rutgers University libraries, computer Labs, and recreations centers via their RUconnection card.

If you are registered and paid for Summer or Winter classes, you may visit the Photo ID Office to obtain your RUconnection card. There is no fee charged for the first issuance of the card.  A replacement fee of $20 applies to lost, stolen, or intentionally damaged cards (See Lost/Replacement ID Cards).

No appointment is necessary. Summer/Winter Session RUconnection cards are issued one week before classes begin. The individual must meet requirements to obtain the RUconnection card and bring valid government-issued photo ID.

Summer/Winter RUconnection cards are valid for one session only. Please do not discard the ID.

Special Programs

Students in special programs will receive information from their program director or secretary on how to obtain an RUconnection card, if they are eligible.

Eligible students in these programs have access to Rutgers University libraries and computer labs by special arrangement, but not recreation facilities or sporting events.

These programs include:
Continuous Education and Outreach
Program in American Language Studies (PALS)
